The rules for a harmless office prank
It comes off in a minute
Every prank on this page has a rollback plan, and that’s the test. Tape peels, googly eyes unstick, the real stapler comes back out of your drawer. If a prank can’t be undone before the target’s next meeting, pick another one.
Hands off food, computers and inboxes
Nobody’s food or drink gets touched, because allergies and diets turn a swapped snack into a real problem. Nobody’s logged-in computer, phone or account gets used either, even one left open. And no fake emails from HR or IT, no fake layoff memos, no alarms. Those feel real for a minute, and that minute is the whole problem.
Leave phishing tests to IT, or play Phish or IT, where the fake emails are the game.
Know who you’re pranking
Americans split almost down the middle on April Fools’ pranks. 44% find them amusing and 41% find them annoying. So pick a target who pranks back and leave the rest alone. Prank across or up, never down, because a new starter or an intern can’t laugh it off the way a peer can.
Someone’s last afternoon is fair game once the card full of farewell messages is signed, and an office award with a grand title makes a prank they get to keep.
Prank the job, never the person
The best pranks tease the office: the jargon, the reorg, the meeting that could have been an email. Nothing about anyone’s looks, background, family or a mistake they’d rather forget.
Pranks with a fake screen
Which screen for which prank
The fake screens run in a browser tab and leave full screen with Esc, which makes them the easiest pranks to undo. Try the fake update screen, which stalls at 99% just as you’re due to present. The fake blue screen crashes on cue, in a modern style or a 1990s one.
Use your own screen
Run them on your own laptop, or on a meeting room screen you’ve booked. Never on a coworker’s computer, because it’s logged in as them, and the prank stops being harmless the moment you sit down at it.
April Fools at the office
What works on April 1
Pranks the whole team is in on beat pranks on one person. Try a matching color day or a stand-up in nothing but jargon. On a call, everyone gets the same name and the same funny Zoom background. Set them up the evening before and own up by lunch, so the afternoon is a normal one. A daft icebreaker question at the morning stand-up tells everyone what kind of day it is.
The stapler in jelly
The stapler set in Jell-O has made it onto TV twice. In its very first episode, the US version of The Office did it, word for word from the UK original. Do it with a cheap stapler of your own, and give the real one back the same day.
Questions about office pranks
What are some harmless office pranks?
Googly eyes on everything on a desk, a monitor framed in sticky notes, or a doughnut box full of vegetables with the real doughnuts in the fridge. Each comes off in a minute and costs nobody their lunch or their work.
What are easy last-minute office pranks?
Tape a note over the light under someone's mouse, or rename everyone on a call to the same name. Or put the fake update screen on your own laptop just before you present. Each takes a minute.
What is a good prank to pull on a coworker?
One they'd pull on you: a gift-wrapped desk for someone who loves the holidays, a rubber duck for a developer. Pick a coworker who pranks back, and never a new starter.
What are good April Fools pranks for work?
Pranks the whole team joins: a matching color day, a jargon-only stand-up, or an invite called Mandatory alignment session that turns out to be cake. Set up the night before and own up by lunch.
Is it OK to prank your boss?
If they joke with the team, a light one is fine: a name plate with a grand title, or googly eyes on their stapler. Skip anything that touches their computer, their calendar or a meeting with their own boss.
What pranks should you never do at work?
Never touch someone else's food or drink, or a coworker's logged-in computer or phone. Skip fake emails from HR or IT, fake layoff news, alarms and anything that breaks or costs money. Those stop being funny before the reveal.
