From 9 am on Tuesday it’s 63 hours until Friday starts and 80 until a 5 pm finish. Work 9 to 5 and only 24 of those 80 are desk hours before Friday. The other 48 are evenings and sleep, and Friday’s own eight are the ones the countdown to 5pm counts down.

What Fridays look like now

Friday gets 16% of the week’s meetings. Tuesday gets 23%, which is Tuesday’s problem.

Americans in jobs that can be done from home worked 7 hours 6 minutes on Fridays in 2024. That’s 78 minutes less than in 2019, or about 90 once you adjust for who holds those jobs. Between 35% and 40% of them worked from home on Thursdays and Fridays, up from 15%. Friday hours in jobs done on site barely moved. A till has no idea what day it is.

Tracking software logs the average US Friday finish at 4:03 pm, nearly an hour earlier than in early 2021. That’s where the 4:03 on the Friday finish switch comes from.

Friday in the office

Some buildings shut whole floors on a Friday to save on heating. Whoever does come in squeezes onto the floors that are still warm, next to people from teams they’ve never met.

With up to 40% of home-capable workers out on a Friday, the rest of the building is quiet too. For anyone on a set number of office days, that makes Friday a tempting one to pick. Nobody drops by, a meeting room is always free and the report gets finished before lunch.

The Friday 5 pm meeting

Friday has the fewest meetings of the week, so the one booked for 5 pm stands out. People forgive it in two cases. Either something broke just before the weekend, or the team spans so many time zones that Friday at 5 here is the one hour they all share. A meeting put there on purpose, with nothing on fire, gets declined. Anything due EOW was due by the time it starts.

Leaving early in the UK

On summer Fridays, UK home broadband traffic drops 8% between 3 and 5 pm compared with winter ones. 48% of people say they aren’t allowed to finish early. 32% do it regularly anyway.

The four-day week

All 17 organisations in a UK four-day week pilot kept it. 12 stayed on four days and 5 on a nine-day fortnight. The four-day week now has 263 accredited employers.

In Australia, 14 of the 15 firms in a two-year trial kept theirs. Across 141 organisations in six countries, staff on a four-day week had less burnout and better health after six months.

28% of US workers name a four-day week as the perk they’d want most. Until they get it, Thursday is only nearly Friday, and is it Friday yet still says no.
