How to play Pizza Party

It was a record quarter, and leadership bought pizza. The VP is at the lectern with a speech about the quarter. The box on the table holds 12 slices, and there are 10 coworkers in the room, plus you.

Hold the Reach for a slice button, or hold Space, and your hand moves toward the box. Hold for 0.7 seconds in total and you have a slice, then about a second to eat it before your hand is free again. Let go and your hand stays where it stopped, so you can reach in short goes.

When the VP looks up

She either reads her notes or looks up at the room. Reading is safe. Just before she looks up, she pauses for half a second, and that pause is your only warning.

If you’re still reaching when she looks up, you’re caught. HR notes it and your hand goes back to the start. Three notes and you’re escorted back to your desk, which ends the round.

Let go on the pause and you lose nothing, because your hand keeps its place. As in Boss Key, the whole game is timing. Move while nobody is watching, and freeze when somebody is.

Who else gets a slice

Coworkers take slices while she talks. The first one reaches the box about 4.5 seconds in, and the rest keep coming. Your manager takes two.

Do the math. Nine coworkers take one each and the manager takes two, which leaves exactly one slice for you. Take a second slice and someone at the back of the queue goes without.

The round ends when the box is empty or when the speech ends, at 45 seconds. The box usually runs out first. Anyone who hasn’t reached it by then goes without, and your result counts them. If the speech ends first, the slices left over are saved for leadership.

How Pizza Party scores

Your score is the number of slices you ate. No slice gets the Hungry stamp, one gets One slice each, and two or more get Fed. Three HR notes get Escorted out, whatever you managed to eat.

The result also shows your HR notes, your best score and how many coworkers went without. Share it and the line reads “I got 2 slices at the Pizza Party on Corpo Mode.”

Where the pizza party meme comes from

The office pizza party meme is about a swap. Staff work hard, pay stays put, and the company says thanks with pizza and gifts in place of a raise or a bonus. The genre has a formal name, Corporations Throwing Pizza Parties, which reads like a line in a budget.

The earliest one on record dates to January 31, 2019. It used the Drowning High Five format, with a pizza party as the reward for hardworking staff. The joke spread in the early 2020s. In June 2021 a CEO asked in public why chief executives get million-dollar bonuses for hitting their goals while workers get a pizza party. That drew 30,000 likes.

In 2023 a run of captioned images on the same theme went viral. In our work memes game, pizza heads the list of office rewards that stand in for a raise.

What an office pizza party means

Free pizza, beer and branded swag used to pass as a proper thank-you. Now the pizza party stands for recognition done on the cheap, and for pay that didn’t move. It lands worst in a good year. Thanks fall flat when pay doesn’t feel fair, and flatter still when the profits never reach the people who made them.

What workers want instead of pizza

22% of employees say they get the right amount of recognition for their work, the same share as in 2022. In those two years, senior leaders became 50% more likely to strongly agree that recognition matters. The belief moved. The recognition stayed where it was.

The recognition that works has five traits: fulfilling, authentic, personalized, equitable and built into the culture. 55% of US employees get none at all, or none with a single one of those traits. One box for the whole floor struggles with personalized.

Staff who got the good kind in 2022 were 45% less likely to have left by 2024. Personal doesn’t mean expensive. One company gave an editorial director who joked about landing a sneaker deal a mock endorsement contract, and a new pair of shoes every month for a year. Spotify gives staff a mandated week off, called Wellness Week.

What people would take instead varies. Some want more responsibility and a way up. Others want a few extra days off, summer Fridays, discounted company products, or more flexibility and remote work.

Pay instead of pizza

62% of US workers say their pay fell behind their household costs over the past year, the highest share in four years. Only 57% got a pay increase of any kind, the lowest since the count began in 2022. 44% say they’re likely to ask for a raise in the next 12 months.

Offered a choice, 52% of employees would take a higher salary over equity, bonuses or profit sharing. Pizza wasn’t one of the options.

Ask how valued people feel and the lectern answers differently from the queue. 42% of VPs and the C-suite feel extremely valued by their company. Among individual contributors, it’s 12%.

64% of managers and HR leaders say budget limits hold back how they recognize and reward staff. A pizza fits most budgets.

One slice each

The order is worked out from the headcount, one slice a person with nothing spare. Someone on a client call comes back to an empty box and the smell. The note on the lid asks everyone to be mindful of others.

The pizza does work, for a while. A floor that spent the month agreeing the workload is too much eats a slice each, and someone says it’s a good place to work, all things considered.

The lip balm in a record year

Profits break the record, and every desk gets a branded lip balm with a pun on the cap. The thank-you post goes out that afternoon in LinkedIn speak. The question about raises will be circled back to.

The bring-your-own ice cream social

The ice cream social goes in the calendar two weeks ahead, with a sign-up sheet. The sheet is for flavors, because everyone brings their own ice cream. Leadership provides the room, and the company’s anniversary gets a pin.

A water bottle, and the same salary

The review goes well. You’re told your work is valued and handed a steel bottle with the company logo. The salary line on the letter hasn’t moved, and the landlord doesn’t take bottles.
