WFO meaning: work from office
WFO stands for work from office: today you're working at your employer's office instead of at home. It's the opposite of WFH, and it gets used the same way, in a status, a calendar or a team rota.

What WFO means
WFO meaning in a status or a rota
WFO means work from office. It tells your team you’re in the building today, at a desk, reachable in person as well as on chat. It’s the mirror image of WFH, and the two often sit side by side on a team calendar.
You’ll see it as a status (“WFO today”), on a rota (“Tue, Thu: WFO”) and in job ads that want to be clear about the commute. Some offices use “in office” or “on site” for the same thing. WFO is the version that fits in a calendar cell.
WFO, WFH and the hybrid week
On a hybrid schedule, the week is a mix of the two. A typical team calendar has WFO on its anchor days and WFH on the rest. Everyone marks it so you know who to find at the coffee machine and who to call.
In July 2025, most US hybrid workers were WFO three or four days a week, 39% and 34%, and both shares had grown since 2024. Five days of WFO is the old normal, now usually called a full return to office.
The other WFOs
Weather Forecast Office
To a meteorologist, a WFO is a Weather Forecast Office. In the US National Weather Service, each one issues the warnings, advisories and short-term forecasts for its own patch of counties. If a WFO posts about a storm, nobody is announcing their commute.
Workforce optimization
In call centres, WFO means workforce optimization: a strategy and a software suite for serving customers well at the lowest running cost. It pulls together staff scheduling, quality checks on calls and the analytics behind both.
Context settles it. In a colleague’s status, it’s work from office. A contact centre job ad asking for WFO experience means the software, and a storm warning means the weather.
A day of WFO
Who still works from office every day
Full-time WFO has become the exception at big companies, and it lands unevenly. Of America’s 100 biggest companies by revenue, 29 asked for five office days a week in mid-2025. 67 were hybrid.
Pay changes the odds too. In the UK, 64% of workers earning under £30,000 were expected in the office full time, against 20% of those earning over £50,000. And only 7% of UK chief executives said they go in five days a week.
What WFO days are like
A WFO day starts with the badge at the gate and the hunt for a desk with a working monitor. By 10 you’re on a video call with a colleague who’s three rows away, because the rest of the team is on WFH.
Lunch is the one meeting that’s better in person. The walk to the kitchen is where you learn about the reorg a week early. WFO days also bring the interruptions, from “got a sec” to the fire drill.
A WFO day that ends at 10:45, after one coffee and a wave, has a name of its own: coffee badging. On a Monday, WFO adds an alarm clock and a commute to the Sunday scaries.
It costs money as well. In 2025, US hybrid workers put an office day at $55: $15 for the commute, $9 for parking, $13 for breakfast and coffee and $18 for lunch.
What only happens on WFO days
- Birthday cake in the kitchen at 3, announced by an email with the subject “Cake”.
- The fire drill, which always falls on your office day.
- The printer queue, and the colleague who prints 80 slides double-sided by mistake.
- Free lunch on the day the leadership team visits, and only on that day.
- A conversation by the lift that settles in two minutes what a thread failed to settle in two days.
A Slack status with WFO in it
Status update, Tuesday 8:31 am
WFOin the office today and Thursday, desk 4.12 by the window. Grab me for the budget questions in person, it’s faster than another thread. Camera off on the 3 pm, the floor is loud.
Getting dressed for WFO
WFO days have a dress code, even where none is written down: the trousers that don’t come out on WFH days. Some people go further and treat the commute as a catwalk, the office siren approach. Others keep a hoodie in the drawer for the air conditioning.
Shared desks change the routine. On hot desking floors, WFO also means carrying everything you own in a bag and setting it up again each morning. At three letters, WFO is among the shortest entries in the jargon dictionary, and at $55 a go, one of the dearest.
Questions about WFO
What is WFO?
At work, WFO means work from office: today you're in the building, at your desk, rather than at home. In weather it's a Weather Forecast Office, and in call centres it's workforce optimization software.
What does WFM mean?
In call centres, WFM is workforce management, the scheduling side that plans shifts so enough people are on when the calls come in. Workforce optimization, the other WFO, is the wider kit that WFM sits inside.
What is workforce optimization?
It's how contact centres try to keep customers happy while spending as little as possible. The software behind it ties together shift scheduling, call quality checks and analytics.
Is WFO the same as RTO?
No. WFO describes a single day in the office, while RTO, return to office, is the policy that decides how many of those days you owe. An RTO mandate is how a WFH person becomes a WFO person.
