What a tiger team is
Tiger team meaning at work
A tiger team is a handful of people picked for what they know, taken off their normal work and pointed at one problem with a deadline. The problem is usually urgent and usually crosses departments: an outage, a launch going wrong, a big client about to leave. When it’s fixed, the team breaks up.
The dictionary version is a group put together for especially difficult or critical problems, often working outside the usual reporting lines. Most tiger teams are cross-functional by design, because the problem rarely stays inside one department. Each department sends its subject matter expert, which is why the same names turn up every time.
The security sense
In security, a tiger team is paid to attack. Its job is to get past an organization’s defences, physical or digital, and report how it did it. Security people also say red team for an authorized group playing the adversary. The goal is the same either way: find the hole before somebody less friendly does.
The physical version is the one that makes the office newsletter. A tester in a hi-vis vest, carrying a ladder, walks in behind someone who holds the door. Nobody asks a person with a ladder where they’re going. The report afterwards recommends badge readers, and a word with whoever held the door.
Tiger team, task force, war room
A task force can be large and slow, and some outlive the problem they were set up for. Tiger teams are small and meant to be quick. The war room is where one sits, usually a meeting room with the blinds down and a whiteboard nobody is allowed to wipe.
Where the tiger comes from
The Apollo 13 story
The dictionaries that list the phrase give it no date and no reason for the tiger. A popular story comes from Apollo 13 in 1970, where the flight controllers who brought the crew home get called the Tiger Team.
NASA’s own day-by-day history of that rescue names its control teams by colour: White, Black, Gold and Maroon. It doesn’t call any of them a tiger team. The legend may still be true. NASA’s official account just doesn’t say so.
NASA still uses it
The agency uses the phrase today. Before Europa Clipper launched for Jupiter’s moon Europa in October 2024, the mission had a tiger team checking whether key electronics could take the radiation. Its findings fed a risk-based decision to launch. That’s the phrase at full strength: a narrow question, real experts and a date that could not move.

Who gets picked
The same five people get picked for every tiger team, because they fixed the last fire. Being picked is a compliment, and it comes with no extra pay and no fewer emails. Their day jobs don’t pause, so the tiger team meets at 7 pm on top of everything else. When the crisis ends, nobody tells them it’s over. The channel goes quiet and the next invite arrives a month later.
A tiger team usually gets called when something mission critical breaks. Sometimes it gets called a week after, once the outage reaches a vice president’s inbox.
When it stops being a tiger team
A tiger team with a weekly slot and a slide template has turned into a committee. Past a full quarter, it’s a department with no budget and no headcount. Once it gets a logo, it has outlived the problem it was set up to fix. The ad hoc part was the point: one problem, then everyone goes home.
A tiger team asked to fix everything at once is being asked to boil the ocean. Give it one problem and a finish line. Rare among entries in the jargon dictionary, the phrase carries its own deadline.
Running one that works
Setting one up takes a short list. Five people or fewer, each with a skill nobody else in the group has. One problem, written in a sentence everyone agrees on. Someone who decides when the team disagrees. Day jobs covered by someone else, in writing. An end date, and a one-page write-up of what broke and what stops it breaking again. Skip the write-up and the same team meets again next spring.

Questions about tiger teams
Why is it called a tiger team?
Nobody knows for sure. No dictionary entry gives an origin, so every story about the tiger is a guess, including the popular one about Apollo 13.
What's another phrase for tiger team?
Task force, strike team or SWAT team. In plain words, it's a small group set up to fix one problem fast.
What is the difference between a red team and a tiger team?
In security, a red team is an authorized group that plays the attacker to test an organization's defences, and tiger team can name the same job. In business, a tiger team fixes a problem and attacks nothing.
What does a tiger team do?
It works one problem until it's solved: finds the cause, fixes it and writes down how to stop it coming back. Then it disbands and its members go back to their day jobs.
