What FYA means

For your action

In corporate email, FYA means for your action. It turns up most on forwarded emails: someone passes a thread on, and FYA tells you the job buried inside it is now yours. The label can sit in the subject line, at the top of the message or after your name in the greeting. Wherever it sits, it changes the email from news into work.

FYA and FYI

FYI means for your information. It goes on an announcement or a heads-up, something you should know, with nothing to do. FYI has been in print since at least 1948, when a magazine cable ended with one. FYA is the version with homework. The difference is one letter, and it can be an afternoon.

The two get mixed up in both directions. An FYI with a deadline inside it is a disguised FYA. An FYA with no task inside it is an FYI with ideas above its station.

For your attention, and for your amusement

FYA has two other meanings. For your attention is close to the action sense: look at this, soon. A British learner’s dictionary lists a third, for your amusement, used when you email someone a joke. So the same three letters can mean “approve this by Friday” or “here’s a video of a dog in a tie”. Most inboxes could use more of the amusement sense and less of the other two.

FYA in a text

fya as fire

In texts and on social media, fya is usually slang for fire, meaning excellent: an outfit, a song or a meal that’s fya is very good. It comes from how fire is pronounced in varieties of Black English, and the spelling fiyah is more common online. Fyah is also a common form of fire in Jamaican English. None of this has anything to do with the Q4 budget. In a team chat, “the new logo is fya” is a compliment, and the only action it asks for is a thumbs-up.

An old email label

The email sense was around early enough to name a band. A British R&B group called Faya started out as FYA, for For Your Attention, an early internet acronym used in email. Their 2004 track Too Hot punned on fire, which tied the two senses together years before anyone put fya in a TikTok caption.

FYA at the office

When FYA arrives with no ask

An FYA on a 40-message thread with no line saying what to do is a task with the instructions removed. Don’t read all 40 messages hunting for it. Reply with one question about what’s needed from you, and by when. Then read only the messages that answer it. The sender usually knows the answer in one line, and has been waiting for someone to ask.

FYA, FW and CC on one email

A forward with FYA on top is a handover, and the clock started when it was sent. A CC with FYA in the body is a contradiction, since the Cc line is for people who only need to know. Add NRN to the same email and the reader has been asked to act and told not to answer. That’s a fair description of some jobs.

Write the action instead

The clearest FYA is a sentence: “Can you approve the Denver trip by Friday noon”. It says what, who and when, and nobody has to decode it. Putting that sentence first is the idea behind BLUF, bottom line up front. Of the email labels in the plain-English jargon dictionary, FYA is the one that hands you work.

FYA to a whole team

An FYA sent to eight people needs a name in it. Without one, everybody reads it as somebody else’s action, and the deadline passes in polite silence. Put the owner in the first line, “Ana, this one’s yours”, and the other seven can read it as an FYI.

Answering an FYA

Do the thing, then reply with one line saying it’s done and where the result is. If you can’t make the deadline, say so the day the FYA arrives, while there’s still time to give it to someone else. The worst answer to an FYA is the one sent at the deadline, explaining why it isn’t done.

A forwarded email marked FYA

Subject: FW: Q4 travel budget, FYA your job now

Sam, finance wants every trip over $500 approved again by Friday noon. Yours is the Denver conference. Two lines on why it still matters and it’s done.
