Fwd: on an email

Fwd: in a subject line

Fwd: at the start of a subject means the email was forwarded: the sender received it and passed it on. Your mail app adds the prefix for you.

In OX App Suite, the forward’s subject gets “Fwd: " in front of the original, and the body opens with the old message’s sender, recipients, date and subject. Select several emails and forward them together, and they travel as attachments, one file per email. Outlook does the same job but writes FW: instead.

What the new reader sees

The forward carries that header block with it. The new reader sees who else was on the original, which addresses they used, and the date it was sent. If the date is nine days ago, they also see how long the email sat in your inbox before you passed it on.

fwd in a chat

Typed in a chat, fwd is usually a verb: “can you fwd me the invite” asks you to send it on. A business dictionary lists fwd as the short form you use when you pass along an email or a text that someone else should see. Like pls, it saves a few letters and sounds like a request from someone with their coat on. The past tense turns up as fwd’d, usually in a status update such as “fwd’d to IT, waiting”, which is the whole update.

Forwarding a whole conversation

Gmail can forward an entire thread at once, with Forward all, as long as conversation view is on. It groups replies by subject, and a conversation breaks off into a new one when the subject line changes. So a forward with a rewritten subject starts a fresh thread. That’s useful when the old subject was “Re: quick question” and the question stopped being quick in March.

Fwd, or add them to the thread

Someone joins a live thread one of two ways. You forward it to them alone, or you reply all and put them on the Cc line. The forward is private, so the group never learns the newcomer read every message. Adding them is public, and the next round of replies includes one more voice. Forward when the newcomer only needs to know. Add them when they need to answer.

Automatic forwarding

Gmail can also forward every new message to another address, after that address confirms with a verification link. Spam stays behind. Offices run the same idea on a shared inbox: one address forwards to five people, and each of them assumes one of the other four replied.

The Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: chain

How the prefixes pile up

Depending on the app, each forward can add one more prefix. A policy update that has passed through five desks can arrive as “Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Updated travel policy”. By the fourth, the subject line is mostly about the journey. Delete the extras before you send it on. Nobody needs the travel history.

The note on top

Every forward needs one line from the person sending it: what the reader should do with it. “See below” is not that line. “Can you check the dates in the second table against the booking” is. A forward with a clear first line is half an email. A bare Fwd: is homework with no question. If the note asks for action by a date, say so, the FYA way. A note that needs nothing back gets tagged NRN.

Fwd among the email codes

Work email runs on short codes, and most of them say who should read what and whether to answer. Fwd is the one that admits the email has already been somewhere else. ASAP asks for speed and OOO explains a silence. Both sit beside it in the jargon dictionary.

FWD away from the inbox

FWD on a car listing

On a car listing, FWD means front-wheel drive: the engine turns the front wheels. One American dictionary also lists four-wheel drive under FWD, so if the difference matters, ask the seller which one they mean. A car ad and a work inbox can share the letters, and only one of them comes with a test drive.

fwd as a word on its own

A crowd-edited dictionary lists fwd as short for forward in every job the word does: adjective, adverb, noun and verb. So fwd can be the button, the act of forwarding or a direction of travel. In a work chat, it’s almost always the button.

@Dana pls fwd send me the signed vendor contract from Tuesday. Legal needs the PDF by 3 and it only went to your inbox.
