EOY in a work email

End of which year

EOY means end of year, and most emails mean the calendar year: get it done before the December break. In finance and planning it can mean the fiscal year instead, which ends whenever the company decided its year ends.

Microsoft is the well-known case. Its fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30, so by October 2026 it’s already a quarter into fiscal 2027. A Microsoft EOY deadline lands in June, with the summer still ahead. Before you plan around an EOY, check what quarter it is in the sender’s calendar, which may not match yours.

The December cutoff

A calendar EOY is rarely December 31. Finance locks the year’s numbers early, half the team is on PTO from mid-December, and the last useful week ends at the holiday party. So EOY usually means something nearer the second Friday of December.

Ask for the date the work is needed, and the date it can still change. They’re often a week apart, and the second one is the deadline that counts.

EOY in a roadmap

On a roadmap slide, “by EOY” does a different job. Said in February, it means this year, with plenty of room. In September it means the item missed its quarter and moved to the last box on the slide. If the item is still there in January, the label becomes early next year.

The family of end dates

EOY is the slowest of the deadline acronyms. EOD and COB give you today, EOW this week, EOM the month and EOQ the quarter. EOY gives you the year, which sounds generous in March and alarming in November.

All of them live in the scheduling corner of the plain-English jargon dictionary, and none of them names an hour. An EOY deadline at least gives you months to find that out.

EOY and the leave nobody took

Days left on the table

As the holidays approached, 48% of US workers said they didn’t expect to take all their vacation days by the end of the calendar year. 36% hadn’t taken a vacation in the previous 12 months.

The cost of going away came first, at 44%. Then came pressure people put on themselves, 28%, and too much work, 24%. Pressure from managers held back 14%, about one person in seven. No cover at work held back 21%, and 24% had no paid leave to take.

The EOY rush

EOY is when every slow project wakes up at once. The roadmap item promised for Q2 is now due EOY. Training budget has to be spent by EOY or it shrinks next year. The QBR for the year’s last quarter gets booked for the week everyone is out.

The EOY review

Year-end reviews run on the same calendar. The self-assessment is due EOY, the manager’s write-up is due a week later, and both get written in the gap between the holiday party and the flight home. Your whole year goes into five boxes and a rating.

December out-of-office replies

The out-of-office replies start in the second week of December, and the people still in the office inherit every EOY promise made to clients. By December 23 the building is mostly heating and one person from finance.

EOY in schools and spreadsheets

BOY and EOY in schools

Schools use EOY for the end of the school year, paired with BOY for the beginning. In a district email, EOY assessments are the tests in late spring, and an EOY report is the one that goes home with the last day of term.

In the US, that puts a teacher’s EOY in June. A parent who reads “EOY celebration” and plans for the holidays turns up six months late.

An EOY figure

In a spreadsheet, EOY marks the value on the last day of the year: the EOY balance, the EOY headcount, the EOY share price. It’s a snapshot, so it hides everything that happened in the other 364 days. Headcount that dipped in March and recovered by December looks flat at EOY.

An email about spending by EOY

Subject: Team training budget, use it or lose it

Hi all, we have $4,200 left in the training budget. Anything not booked by EOY December 11, when finance locks the budget goes back to finance, and next year’s number gets cut to match. Conference tickets count, and so do books.
