EOW meaning in an email
In business, EOW means end of the work week, as in an EOW deadline of 5 p.m. this Friday. Read it that way unless the sender says otherwise: Friday, by the end of their working day. That makes how long until Friday the same number as how long you have.
If your office works a four-day week, EOW is Thursday. If the sender is in another time zone, it’s Friday where they are, which can be Thursday night or Saturday morning where you are.
A public holiday moves it to the last day the office is open. If the client was promised the work on the holiday anyway, someone has to come in. The memo asking for volunteers reads very differently the year the holiday rate is cut.
Where the week ends, to the minute
End of week sounds roomy until someone decides which minute it ends on. Offices that count a late start to the minute count the end of the day in only one direction. Leave a couple of minutes early and it gets mentioned. Send the EOW file after dark and nobody says a word. A 5 pm countdown at least settles what time it is.
EOW, EOD, COB and COP

COB is when the working day ends, especially on a financial market. Its British twin, close of play, is also when a day’s cricket or tennis stops. EOD has a military sense, explosive ordnance disposal, which is listed before the office one. Bomb disposal outranks your deadline. EOW is about when; WFH is about where.
Police
End of watch
Police and the military write EOW on log sheets for the end of a shift or a watch, and that sense is listed first. The same letters mark the date a police officer was killed in the line of duty. EOW beside a date under an officer’s name is a memorial, with no connection to any deadline.
Records
A 1989 finance manual
Nobody knows who first wrote EOW for end of week, and Merriam-Webster doesn’t list it. The earliest example found so far is a 1989 US Department of Veterans Affairs finance manual that spells out “End-of-Week (EOW)”. That’s more explanation than most emails give it.
It sits with EOD and COB among the deadline acronyms of corporate jargon. None of the three comes with an hour attached.
Fridays
The 4:45 pm EOW
An EOW request that lands at 4:45 pm on Friday is a request for your weekend. When you set the deadline yourself, give the day and the hour. “Friday 3 pm” leaves no room for a Sunday night email.
“I’ll get back to you EOW” from your manager has no hour in it at all. It can slide to next Wednesday without anyone breaking a promise.
Friday 5 pm meeting invites
EOW has a cousin: the meeting that starts at the moment the week ends. Some offices ban invites for Friday afternoons outright. Others keep a standing late-Friday review that nobody admits to booking. In the right office, the best decline is short and cheerful. Thank them, tell them to go outside because it’s the weekend, and let your out-of-office message handle whatever arrives after.

What does EOW mean for a job?
In a hiring email it's when they expect to decide or reply: "we'll have an answer by EOW" means by Friday. If Friday comes and goes in silence, a short follow-up on Monday morning is fair.
What does EOW mean in texting?
In a work chat it means end of week, same as in email. From a police officer it more likely means end of watch, the end of their shift.
Is close of business 5 or 6?
Neither is fixed. Close of business is the end of the working day wherever the sender works, and a bank and a bakery supplier don't close at the same hour. If the hour matters, ask for one with a time zone, such as 5 pm Eastern.
What is the difference between cob and EOD?
COB ties the deadline to the office closing. EOD ties it to the day, which leaves room to argue about midnight. On paper they're synonyms, so name an hour whenever the difference matters.
