EOD meaning: by the end of the working day

EOD stands for end of day: have it done before the working day ends, usually the sender's working day. To the military, the same three letters mean explosive ordnance disposal.

What a request for EOD asks

EOD is short for end of day, and the day in question is the working day. “By EOD” asks for the work before the sender logs off today. “EOD Wednesday” moves the same deadline to Wednesday evening. The abbreviation was first recorded between 1960 and 1965, so it was setting deadlines long before anyone could send one at 4:50 pm.

EOD is the daily member of a family in the corporate jargon dictionary. EOW gives you until Friday, COB pins it to the moment the office shuts, and EOY gives you until the holidays. Each one names a moment and leaves out the hour.

Which hour EOD lands on

The day that ends is usually the sender’s. A colleague in London who asks for something by EOD wants it before about 5 pm in London, which is around noon in New York. Nothing in the three letters says so, and the person in New York reads it as their own 5 pm. If yours is 5 pm, how long until 5pm counts down what’s left.

That mismatch is common now. 30% of meetings span more than one time zone, so almost a third of the calendar is already arguing about whose afternoon it is.

EOD or midnight

Read literally, a day ends at midnight. Some people take EOD that way when the deadline is theirs, and the 5 pm way when it’s yours. If the hour matters, write it into the request. “By 4 pm Eastern” can’t be stretched by anyone.

The EOD update and the EOD price

EOD also works as an adjective. Remote teams ask for an EOD update: three lines in the team channel before you log off, saying what got done, what’s stuck and what’s next. It’s a timesheet that learned to write in full sentences.

Traders use it the same way. An EOD price is where a stock or an index closed for the day, and a chart of EOD prices skips everything that happened in between. The EOD update does the same for your afternoon.

The other EODs

Bomb disposal

To the military, EOD means explosive ordnance disposal: examining an explosive device and making it safe. Dictionaries carry that sense next to the office one. An EOD technician’s deadlines are the only ones in this family that nobody negotiates.

EOD as a federal start date

New US federal employees get an EOD of their own: the entry on duty date, the official first day in the job. It’s usually the first day of a two-week pay period, and those start on Sundays. A federal EOD can fall on a Sunday while the new hire reports on Monday. It’s the one EOD that lands on a weekend and upsets nobody.

EOD in medicine, finance and chat

The letters keep other jobs too. In medical notes they can mean every other day. In finance and law, an event of default is the moment a borrower breaks the terms of a loan. Online arguments use it for end of discussion, typed by the person who wants the last word. Pilots use it for end of daylight.

How EOD gets stretched

The 4:50 pm EOD

An EOD request that arrives at 4:50 pm is a request for your evening. The sender will read your reply tomorrow at 9. They needed it for their morning, and EOD was the polite way to write tonight.

The move works in your favour too. Promise something by EOD at 10 am and you’ve claimed the whole working day without naming an hour. Send it at 4:30 and you look early.

The day that ends at 10 pm

For plenty of people the working day stopped ending at 5. Chats sent outside 9 to 5 rose 15% in a year, and meetings booked to begin after 8 pm grew 16%. 29% of active workers have their inbox open again by 10 pm. Somebody’s EOD is in there.

Asking for EOD so it means one time

Put the hour and the time zone in the request: “by 3 pm Pacific today”. If you’re the one being asked, reply with the hour you’ll deliver, which turns a guess into a promise someone can check.

A deadline with an hour also protects the sender. Nobody can claim they read EOD as midnight when the email says 3 pm.

Hi Priya, the client in Lisbon needs the countersigned SOW by EOD 11 am Chicago time. I land in Chicago at 6 and can check from the taxi. Thanks for turning this round so fast.

Questions about EOD

What does EOD mean in the workplace?

End of day: finish the task before the working day ends. With no hour or time zone attached, assume the sender's office hours. Ask when a few hours either way would matter.

What does EOD mean for hiring?

In a job offer it usually means end of day, as in "please reply by EOD Friday". In US federal hiring it's also the entry on duty date, your official first day, which often falls on the Sunday that starts a pay period.

What is EOD in military terms?

Explosive ordnance disposal: examining bombs, mines and other explosive devices and making them safe. The people who do it are EOD technicians.

What is EOD in medical terms?

Every other day, as in a dose taken on alternate days. Medical shorthand varies from place to place, so check any instruction written that way with the pharmacist or the prescriber.
