What the buzzword rankings show
Searched and hated
Synergy, touch base and bandwidth sit near the top of both lists. Each is on three of the five hate rankings and gets more than 11,000 lookups a month. The plain-English jargon dictionary has them as teamwork, check in and time. Synergy and bandwidth are also in the word bank of the corporate bullshit generator. Knowing what synergy means hasn’t made anyone like it more.
Hated, rarely looked up
Circle back is first on three hate rankings, yet the circle back meaning gets only 1,931 searches a month, one for every 24 of synergy’s. Nobody needs it explained, and in buzzword bingo for meetings it’s a square to mark off. Everyone has been circled back to at least once, and most of them are still waiting.
The per my last email meaning gets 232 searches a month, the fewest in the table. The people who get that email work out what it means by the second line.
Looked up, on no hate list
Wheelhouse, table stakes and headwinds each get thousands of lookups a month and appear on none of the five hate rankings. All three are in the phrase bank of the corporate jargon quiz. Most of the 3,567 monthly searches for the table stakes meaning come from the US. Headwinds is how a results call says the quarter went badly, and so far it has got away with it.
Fading
Take this offline is down 50% and run it up the flagpole down 47%. Down since when, nobody said.
The buzzwords in job ads
A job ad has buzzwords of its own, and job hunters translate them on sight.
- Fast-paced. Nobody planned, so everything is due today.
- Dynamic. The job changes after you sign.
- Competitive salary. A number too small to print.
- Wear many hats. Several jobs, one payslip.
- Other duties as needed. The line that grows until it is the job.
- Rockstar, ninja. You’ll cover for the hires they didn’t make.
- Work hard, play hard. Long weeks, then a team night you can’t skip.
- Comfortable with ambiguity. They don’t know what they want either.
- Hit the ground running. There is no training.
- Already knows our internal tools. They’ve picked someone on the inside.
Team player, loyalty and collaboration
Some buzzwords come with a request attached. Team player tends to arrive the week the holiday rate is cut, in a memo that is surprised nobody volunteered. Loyalty is in the same memo, and the rate that used to pay for it isn’t. Every team in professional sport pays its players, which is the part the memo leaves out.
Collaboration is the reason given for more days in the office. Ask which number it should move and the answer is a feeling. Then you collaborate with the next cubicle over a video call.
How the searches and hate lists were counted
Searches
The figures are monthly Google searches for each term’s meaning, such as “synergy meaning”, averaged over September 2025 to August 2026 for the US, the UK and Australia. They are DataForSEO’s estimates, made by splitting Google Ads volumes with clickstream data. Words with other lives outside the office were counted as “ad hoc meaning in business”, “cadence meaning in business” and “moat meaning in business”.
A starred figure is plain Google Ads volume that could not be split, so it includes close variants of the phrase. A lookup means someone wanted a definition, and it can’t tell confusion from curiosity.
Hate rankings
The hate count covers five rankings published from 2024 to 2026. Two are polls, one of 1,004 Australian office workers and one of a panel of 3,000 adults. Three count complaints. Software sorted over 5,000 comments for one, and another tallied posts on X. A third counted 3,000 posts and comments that mention jargon. So the number counts the lists a term is on. It can’t say how much each list hates it.
